Prayer life of the school - Year group prayers

Year Group Prayers

Throughout the school we are gradually encouraging the children to learn a number of basic prayers which every Catholic child ought to know by the time they leave a Catholic school aged 11. There will be no tests or exams, of course, instead we hope that constant use – both at home and at school – will help the children to establish a repertoire of prayers.

This approach will not exclude other prayers – old favourites and newly composed – but will be intended to provide the basic building blocks of their spiritual life for the future.

In each succeeding year the children will continue to use the prayers they have already learnt in previous years. The more they use these prayers at home as well as at school, the more they will come to know and love them.

Reception to Year 2

Before the children reach the end of Year 2 we hope that constant use will enable them to have learnt the following off by heart:

The Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Hail Mary

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

To My Guardian Angel

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here,

ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

Year 3 prayers

By the the end of Yr 3 – which is the First Communion year for many children – we hope that each of the children will have learnt the following off by heart:

Act of Faith

O my God, I believe in You, and all that Your Church teaches, because You have said it, and Your Word is true.

Act of Hope

O my God, I hope in You for grace and for glory, because of Your promises, our mercy, and Your power.

Act of Charity

O my God, because You are so good, I love You with all my heart, and for Your sake I love my neighbour as myself.

Act of Contrition

O my God, because You are so good, I am very sorry that I have sinned against You, and by the help of Your grace I will try not to sin again.

Morning Offering

O my Jesus, through the most pure Heart of Mary, I offer You all the prayers, works and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of Your Divine Heart.

Grace before meals

Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts which we are about to receive from Thy bounty. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Grace after meals

We give Thee thanks, almighty God, for these and all Thy benefits, Who lives and reigns world without end. Amen.

Year 4 prayers

Before the end of Year 4 we hope the children will have learnt how to say the Rosary, and the two short prayers for the Holy Souls in Purgatory:

Joyful mysteries    Sorrowful mysteries
Annunciation    Agony in the Garden
Visitation    Scourging
Nativity Crowning with thorns
Presentation Carrying the Cross
Finding Of Jesus Crucifixion
Luminous mysteries     Glorious mysteries
Baptism of Our Lord Resurrection
Marriage at Cana    Ascension
Preaching of the Gospel   Decent of the Holy Spirit
Transfiguration Assumption of Our Lady into Heaven
Institution of the Eucharist  Coronation of Our Lady as Queen of Heaven

The Hail Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V.  Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

R.  That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray: O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries in the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may both imitate what they contain, and obtain what they promise. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen

For the Holy Souls in Purgatory

V.    Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord

R.    And let perpetual light shine upon them.

V:    May they rest in peace.

R.    Amen.

All:  May the souls of the faithful departed + through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

(Make the Sign of the Cross + at this point.)

Year 5 prayers

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of thy love.

V/.   Send forth thy Spirit, and they shall be created.

R/.   And thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray: O God, who has taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that by the gift of the same Holy Spirit, they may be truly wise and ever rejoice in his consolation. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

The Sub Tuum

We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities; but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

A longer form of the Act of Contrition

O my God, I am sorry and beg pardon for all my sins. I detest them above all things, because they deserve your dreadful punishments, because they have crucified my loving Saviour Jesus Christ, and most of all because they offend your infinite goodness. I firmly resolve, by the help of your grace, never to offend you again, and carefully to avoid the occasions of sin. Amen.

Year 6 prayers

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from whence he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

The Anima Christi

(which we sometimes sing as ‘Soul of my Saviour’)

Soul of Christ, be my sanctification, Body of Christ, be my salvation,

Blood of Christ, fill all my veins, Water from Christ’s side, wash out my stains.

Passion of Christ, my comfort be. O good Jesu, listen to me.

In thy wounds I fain would hide, Ne’er to be parted from thy side.

Guard me should the foe assail me, Call me when my life shall fail me.

Bid me come to thee above, With all thy saints to sing thy love,

World without end. Amen.

The Memorare

Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary, that it is a thing unheard of that anyone ever had recourse to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession and was left forsaken. Inspired by this confidence in thy goodness, therefore, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, a sorrowful sinner. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my words, but in thy clemency hear and answer my prayer.
